Bosom Buddies

Ever wish you could ditch your problems and move in with your best friend? That’s the basic set up for Bosom Buddies, a sitcom that aired on ABC from 1980-1982. When advertising executive Peter Aberdeen (Tom Hanks) finds out his company is downsizing, he quickly packs up his things and moves in with his buddy, struggling artist Kip Wilson (Peter Scolari). The only problem is that Kip lives in a woman’s boarding house and the only room left has a giant, queen-sized bed. Peter comes up with the solution to dress like a woman in order to score the room and thus begins the cross-dressing exploits of Bosom Buddies. Along for the ride are Kip’s oddball friends and the strict landlady, Mrs. Whitmore (Lucille Benson), who never seems to notice that Peter is really a man.

The show was a hit with audiences, thanks in no small part to the chemistry between Hanks and Scolari. Both actors were up for a Golden Globe award in 1981 for their work on the show. Bosom Buddies also spawned the hit movie, Tootsie.
